After having one of the worst weeks ever this film definitely put me in a great mood.

Eddie the Eagle is a biopic about Great Britain’s first Olympic Ski Jumper, Michael Edwards. Edwards started late in his career as a ski jumper but made a name for himself at the Winter Olympics in Calgary in 1988. He was not the best of athletes and was not a gold medal winner but he had the determination and mindset that won gold in the hearts of many.

Egerton’s performance from start to finish filled my heart with joy. This film had the perfect amount of humor and drama. Having such a charm about him and his character portrayal of Edwards, I found myself, smiling, crying, laughing, and slightly on the edge of the seat during the entire film. At times I thought, “I really want to be friends with Michael Edwards”. Hands down Egerton’s performance was brilliant. His costar Jackman held his own as well. (I am biased because I am a huge Jackman fan so I won’t comment on that.)

Eddie the Eagle is most definitely the feel-good-movie of 2016. It is a family friendly picture, perfect to go see if you need a pick me up. It is brought to you by 20th Century Fox and will officially be released in theatres this month, February 26th. Make sure you go and see it. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

From October 22nd to November 1st we celebrate the 24th annual Philadelphia Film Festival hosted by the [Philadelphia Film Society] (www.filmadelphia.org). This 11 day festival showcases dozens of films from around the world. On Tuesday night, the 7th day of the festival, I was lucky enough to attend a screening of Camino. Written by Daniel Noah and directed by Josh C. Waller this film is definitely one to go see in the new year.

Camino is a powerful film from start to finish. The story follows an award winning war photographer and photo journalist Avery Taggart (Zoë Bell) on her journey to capture “honest imagery”. She travels to the rough jungles of Columbia where she follows a group of missionaries led by a Spaniard, El Guero (director, Nacho Vigallondo) and records their lives on film. She finds herself in a deadly game of cat and mouse after she captures El Guerro in an act of undeniable cruelty that could ruin him. Knowing that El Guerro will do everything at his disposal to retrieve the photo and the photographer who took it, Avery flees into the jungle to escape.

I was literally on the edge of my seat during every scene. Finding myself biting my nails I kept screaming inside my head “Oh my goodness! Are you serious?!” and turning to my friend and giving him a nudge as he gave me the same look. There isn’t much that I can say about how real this film is without giving away the key scenes. I can say that Zoë Bell is definitely a badass and I hope I am never lost in a jungle with her.

After the screening there was a Q&A with director, Josh C. Waller and Zoë Bell herself. She is definitely one of the coolest chicks I have ever met. Let’s just leave it at that. According to Waller the film took Noah 2 days to write and was shot in about 21 days. He noted that compared to other films Camino was smooth sailing from the get go. Shot in Hawaii, and having only a week with Bell before she had to return to Hateful 8 they were able to finish shooting 5 months later and the end result is great. Bell reported that it was a bit strange after being gone for so long to get back into character with Waller’s film but once she did she was relieved. You could really tell from her excitement during the Q&A that she had a blast filming Camino.

The highlight of that night was when I got to get a quick photo op with her and she mentioned that I smelled amazing compared to other people, #win #getacomplimentfromacelebrity. (I can cross that off my bucket list.) Let me just finish by reiterating the importance of seeing this film, especially all you action-thriller moviegoers. Great film, great writing, great directing, great acting great everything. Go see Camino in theaters 2016.

I met Michele at Temple University 3 years ago while studying a Russian Language course. Michele Haines is the founder of Spring Mill Cafe. She has cooked food all over the world and has participated in many philanthropical endeavors. Learn more about Michele HERE

We met early in the morning to set the table for the lovely lunch that was in preparation. An hour went by and then we grabbed our necessities and headed out the door.

Our day began at The Headhouse where we met with a small group of people doing a tour of historic Philadelphia. Sunday at Headhouse is the meeting place for local farmers. Headhouse Farmers Market runs every Sunday from May to December between the hours of 10am- 2pm beneath the Headhouse Shambles at Headhouse Square located at 2nd and Lombard Streets.

Michele took us under the Shambles and introduced us to a few of her favorite producers and friends. Among them were a group of farmers from Chester Springs, Pennsylvania known as Birchrun Hills Farm. The are a family owned dairy farm that specializes in handcrafted raw milk cheeses. They are best known for their Birchrun Blue and Fat Cat cheeses. I was more impressed by their Equinox which is a creamy cheese with notes of caramel and a hint of salt. DELICIOUS.

After stopping for cheese we headed over to local meat vendor LaDivisa. You can find them at Reading Terminal. We learned a bit about the history of their house-made charcuterie and the process of making it.

Our final stop was at John & Kira’s which is a local chocolate shop, also found at Reading Terminal. We sampled their Chocolate Bees and their Chili Pepper Urban Garden Bar. All I can say is what a perfect end to the little tour through the market. I’ll be going back next Sunday.

Alas it was time for lunch at Michele’s. She invited the small group of 5 back to her beautiful home to enjoy a lovely Mediterranean Paella. As I watched Michele prepare the paella I was in awe. The colorfulness of the dish as it was being prepared was beautiful sight and the aroma of spices that filled the kitchen was making my mouth water. Watching Michele in action was just so much fun. You could really tell she enjoys what she does.

As I poured the wine for her guests she nudged me and insisted that for her next event I learn how to correctly pour the wine. Finally it was time for everyone to sit down and enjoy the food. As Michele and I headed back into the kitchen we could here them saying how impressed they all were with what Michele had accomplished in her small kitchen. After they finished eating it was time for dessert. A simple chocolate mousse with a few raspberries on top. Delectable the lunch was a success. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed taking a little food tour through the market and then sitting down to enjoy an afternoon with Michele.

What a perfect Sunday. I encourage you all to make a trip to the Spring Mill Cafe and sit down for a lovely meal. Congratulations on 30 years of fine dining!

tag:tianarenee.svbtle.com,2014:Post/mims-on-a-friday-night2015-06-07T11:05:56-07:002015-06-07T11:05:56-07:00Mimøs on a Friday Night
Back in March I was introduced to this band Mimøs during a show I was playing. I immediately fell in love with their music. This band, birthed in Philadelphia, is comprised of three talented artists, Carlos, Charles, and Addison, whose dedication to their craft is seen through their alluring melodies and expressive lyrics.

Friday night at The Fire I attended another one of their shows where I was introduced to a new type of instrument as well as a few songs that weren’t on their album PLAY (which you should definitely check out).

ANYWAY…

Kicking their set off with Kid Walking was a great way to get the crowd in the mood. One of the nice things about Mimøs is that they have these memorable guitar licks and drum patterns. Another nice song they played Poor Mama had a cool vibe to it, especially with Charles on guitar and Carlos on vocals & bass. (I’m actually listening to it right now sitting outside in my front yard under this huge Maple.) Their music is just so chill.

Quebec Nights just came on which is perfect because I’d like to give Addison a quick shoutout “Congratulations!”. (He just got married!) So, what was great about Friday night was that the band had a few friends join them on stage. Katherine Oaks accompanied them on Quebec Nights which added an appeal to the song. When the band did PLAY they brought on stage an instrument called the shruti box, which is an Indian instrument. Very neat to hear how the instruments drone-like sound added to the song.

I’m a fan of musicians who add a cover song or two into their set. To me it lets me know who sort of inspires them as an artist, and with Mimøs they did Bill Withers Ain’t No Sunshine. Perfect choice for the tunes they chose for Friday. I’ve got to say that overall I thoroughly enjoyed their set. I could go on forever just telling you what makes Mimøs so special but I feel like you should just check them out yourselves and then we could talk together.

CHECK ‘EM OUT
